The Ebi (海老) Katana - Our thoughts behind this design:
Ebi (海老) in Japanese means shrimp or lobster. In traditional Japanese culture, Ebi is a Engimono (縁起物, Lucky object) that symbols for many goods things:
Symbol of Longevity
Shrimp and lobsters with their long whiskers and bent posture, resemble an old man, symbolizing longevity. During the Heian period, this resemblance led to the naming of shrimp as "海老" (ebi, meaning old man of the sea).
Symbol of Auspiciousness
Shrimp and lobsters will turn bright red when boiled and with protruding eyes, symbolize auspiciousness. Red is a fortune color in Japan, as well as many Asian countries.
Symbol of Strong Fortune
Shrimp and lobsters are celebrated for their strong, jumping ability, symbolizing strong fortune. Lobster's hard, spiky shells remind one of a samurai armor, making them a favored dish among Sengoku period warlords like Oda Nobunaga 織田信長 and Toyotomi Hideyoshi 豊臣秀吉.
Symbol of Vitality
Shrimp and lobsters as crustaceans, have an external skeleton that allows them to molt and grow, symbolizing vitality and the ability to rejuvenate. This quality is seen as a metaphor for human flexibility and resilience.
That's why we used this design. We hope this sword will bring you good fortune, health life, and the courage to tackle any challenges!
Besides these reasons, we went with the name because lobsters and shrimp are what we always end up eating the most at buffets.
The Blade
For the Ebi, we used our grass hamon aesthetic polishing T10 blade from our Custom Katana. We add something off menu to it, we spend more time to sharpen the edge and make it even sharper. The sharpness level of this katana is equal to "Enhanced sharpen" of our custom katana.
We hope for this blade, you can use it for light cutting (bottles, pool noodles, tatami mats etc), have a very smooth cutting experience. At the same time you can appreciate the beautiful Hamon and Polishing work we done.
The Saya
Red Saya : The red saya we used is a beautifully hand-painted piece. It features a rich, deep red base color with intricate black patterns that create a striking marbled effect. The deep red base color of the saya is reminiscent of the vibrant red hue of a cooked lobster or shrimp.
Blue Saya : The blue saya is also hand painted, features ocean theme that matches the shrimp and lobster koshirae. You can check the video here:
The Tsuba Habaki
Tsuba is the CKTB79 from our custom katana. This set is made of brass and consist of 2 lobster Menuki, lobster Kashira and Fuchi. The Habaki is not in our custom katana options, we might consider adding it in the future.
The Tsuka
We used Hishigami wrapping and real samegawa (Panel) for the Ebi. And we use real silk for the Ito, it makes the tsuka more tight and the feeling on hand is more comfortable.
