足間 Ashima

What is Ashima in Japanese Katana terminology?

Ashima refers to the space between a pair of metal fittings, known as ""Ichi no Ashi"" and ""Ni no Ashi"", attached to the scabbard (Saya) when wearing the ""Tachi"" (long sword). These fittings stabilize the ""Tachi-Obi"" (sword belt) and the scabbard.
