What is Funagata in Japanese Katana terminology?

The term "Funagata" (船形, ふながた) refers to one of the shapes of the tang (Nakago) of a Japanese sword. The name "Funagata", which means "boat-shaped", comes from the fact that the edge of the tang has a gentle curve that resembles the bottom of a boat. This type of tang is particularly characteristic of swordsmiths from the "Soshu tradition" (相州伝). The Soshu tradition is one of the five main traditions of Japanese swordsmithing, known for its distinctive style and techniques.
