本阿弥家 Honami family

What is Honami family in Japanese Katana terminology

The Honami family, also known as "Honamike", is a lineage of sword appraisers that originated from "Honami Myohon". Initially, they were part of the Douhoushuu, who performed miscellaneous duties for the shogun in the Muromachi shogunate, and were involved in the polishing of swords. However, they also began to appraise swords based on a vast amount of polishing data. They later served figures such as Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Tokugawa Ieyasu. Particularly, the "origami" (certificates) issued between the tenth generation, Mitsumitsu, and the thirteenth generation, Kouchuu, are highly regarded for their accuracy.
