What is Nurishi in Japanese Katana terminology?

A "Nurishi" (塗師) is a craftsman who applies lacquer to the base of the scabbard (Saya, 鞘) and performs Maki-e (a Japanese lacquer art) in the creation of the sword mountings (Koshirae, 拵). In addition to lacquering, the Nurishi also decorates the scabbard using materials such as blue shells, gold powder, and plant fibers.
