Tachio (Hakio) in Japanese Katana terminology
太刀緒(佩緒) Tachio (Hakio) / Sword Cord (Hakio)
What is Tachio (Hakio) in Japanese Katana terminology?
This is a cord used when wearing a sword (Tachi) on the waist (Haku: to wear by hanging on the waist). The mainstream is to use a flat leather cord of about one fathom (approximately 3m) or a braided cord woven in a tortoiseshell pattern. When wearing, it is passed through the Obitori (belt holder) and wrapped around the waist to secure the scabbard (Saya). When it is displayed or stored in normal times, it is tied in a unique method called ""Tachi knot"" (Tachimusubi) for a good appearance.
