What is Togishi in Japanese Katana terminology?
A "Togishi" (研師) is a craftsman who polishes blades such as swords, using over 20 different types of whetstones. The Togishi's role is to refine the shape of the blade in such a way that the blade pattern (hamon) appears vividly and beautifully. The artistic value of the blade is preserved through the polishing work of the Togishi. This process is not only about sharpening the blade, but also about bringing out the aesthetic qualities of the sword, making the Togishi's role crucial in the sword-making process.
