Tsumamimaki in Japanese Katana terminology
摘巻 Tsumamimaki / Pinching Wrap
What is Tsumamimaki in Japanese Katana terminology?
This is a common method of handle wrapping (Tsukamaki). It is designed to prevent slippage by tightly wrapping flat woven threads or leather cords around the handle, and making the overlapping parts of the threads or cords appear as if they have been pinched and raised. This method was widely used because it fits well in the palm when gripping the handle.
