Watari-maki in Japanese Katana terminology
渡巻 Watari-maki Cross Wrap
What is Watari-maki in Japanese Katana terminology?
This refers to the wrapping applied to the upper part of the scabbard (Saya) of a Tachi, from the Koiguchi (scabbard mouth) downwards for about one shaku (approximately 30cm), in a flat wrap. The same thread used for the handle wrap is used. It is wrapped because the area between the first foot (the foot metal fitting on the Koiguchi side) and the second foot (the foot metal fitting on the Kissaki/point side) tends to hurt when wearing armor.
