What is Buddha Armor (Hotoke Dou)
of Samurai Armor

Buddha Armor (Hotoke Dou)
This is a type of cuirass (Do) in Tosei Gusoku (modern armor). It is made by joining long, narrow plates horizontally to create a ‘Horizontal Join Armor’ (Yokohagidou), or vertically to create a ‘Vertical Join Armor’ (Tatehagidou), and then filling the seams with lacquer to smooth the surface. Alternatively, it can be made from a single plate of iron or leather. It is named ‘Buddha Armor’ because the smooth surface, with no visible seams, resembles the chest of a Buddha statue.
