半頬 Half Cheek or Hanbo

What is Hanbo of Samurai Armor?

This is a piece of armor that protects from both cheeks to the chin, without the nose part. It was formerly called ""Cheek Guard"" (Hooate). It has been used since the Nanboku-cho period, and in the Muromachi period, several stages of plates called ""Suga"" were added to protect the throat at the lower part of the chin. It has a shape similar to the ""Half Neck"" (Happuri) that protects the forehead and both cheeks, turned upside down. There are types such as ""Swallow Cheek"" (Tsubakurobo), ""Monkey Cheek"" (Sarubo), and ""Etchu Cheek"" (Etchubo).
