旗 Hata

What is Hata of Samurai Armor?

"Hata" is an object that has been used as a mark of a warrior's army since the Heian period. During the Kamakura period, the ""Nagarebata"" (also known as ""Long Flag""), which was made by passing a piece of wood through the short side of a long cloth and hoisting it up with a string to flutter in the wind, was mainly used.

As the Muromachi period came, conflicts between warriors occurred everywhere. To distinguish between friends and foes, ""Noboribata"" (a flag with rings attached to the top and side) was used, which was designed with various elements such as family crests, slogans, symbols, and mottos.
