半首 Half Head or Hatsuburi

What is Hatsuburi of Samurai Armor?

This is an iron-made piece of armor used to protect the forehead and both cheeks. It is also read as ""Happuri"" or ""Hatsumuri"". It was widely used from the middle of the Heian period to the Kamakura period, but it fell out of use due to the development of cheek guards (Hooate) and face cheeks (Menpo). It was made again in the Edo period. It was worn by everyone from high-ranking samurai to low-ranking soldiers, mainly to protect the face from enemy arrows.
