馬鎧 Umayoroi

What is Umayoroi of Samurai Armor?

“Umayoroi” is an armor worn by horses. It has been in use since the Kofun period, but was most commonly used from the Nanboku-cho to the Muromachi period. It consists of a “Bamen” (horse face), “Munayoroi” (chest armor), and “Shiriyoroi” (butt armor). Some horse armors were covered with the tail feathers of mountain birds, peacock feathers, and the skins of tigers and bears.
