A ninjato, also known as a shinobigatana, or ninjaken, is a Japanese sword with a straight, single edged blade. It is widely known as the weapon used by the ninjas in feudal Japan as a concealable weapon for close quarters combat. But there are no history facts, or physical evidence to support this theory. It’s more likely a creation from pop cultures.

Don’t be disappoint even Ninjato is not a real weapon in the history, the design is realistically practical and makes sense for close combats. It’s easier to conceal and the straight design makes stab moves more powerful. This straight blade sword is very similar to Tang Dao (A type of Chinese Dao), or Chokuto, a real straight sword in Japanese history.

Other than Ninjato, Ninjas carry other famous weapons as well, such as shuriken (手裏剣) (throwing stars), kusarigama (鎖鎌) (sickle-and-chain), katana (刀) and naginata (薙刀).

Ninjato VS Katana

The most significant difference between a Ninjato and a katana, is of course the blade. Katana is curved and Ninjato is straight. It’s because Katana is a weapon designed more for cutting, slashing, and Ninjato is more for stabbing.

Other parts of the 2 swords are very similar, in some cases even interchangeable, such as the tsuba, habaki. The saya however is different, because one is straight and one is curved. In our collections, we too have similar designs across katana and ninjatos.

In our Ninjato collection, we present to you large selection of Ninjato swords in various styles. From traditional Japanese sword styles, to something more exquisite. We have tsubas in a variety of styles and colors, for example dragon mouth, demon face, you will find one that matches your personality and tastes.

For the blade material, options available including carbon steel, manganese steel, spring steel, pattern steel and T10 Steel. In some blades we design fancy patterns on it.

All our Ninjato swords are handmade, full tang and battle ready. Because of the exquisite design they might give you a first impression that they are for show only, but the truth is they are functional, they are real swords. Most of our Ninjato swords are about 100 cm long, blade length is about 70cm. Weight is about 800g.

Difficult to decide which Ninjato to buy? No worries, you can also build your own custom Ninjato, we offer large customization options from blade, saya, tsuba etc. You will find the perfect combination for your dream Ninjato.

FAQ:

Can I use Ninjato for actual cutting?

Yes! All our Ninjato are real sword and out of box sharp, they are good for tameshigiri. But please be careful using it, make sure you have practice long enough to use it for actual cutting. Recommended cutting objects are bottles, tatami mats.

What exactly does Ninjatō means in Japanese?

Simply and straight forward, Ninja + tō, means a knife for Ninja. Another word Ninjaken, means Ninja + Ken (sword).
