Clay Tempering Swords
Clay Tempering Swords
These swords use ancient traditional clay tempering in heat treatment process. With mixed clay to cover the blade spine where high hardness isn’t required, then heat the whole blade in the furnace to a certain temperature. After that plunged the blade into a cool pool of quenching liquid (water or oil). The blade spine cools slower due to clay insulation than the blade edge which is exposed. Then different hardness and flexibility appeared between blade spine and edge due to the temperature gap. The blade edge is harder and sharper while the spine is more flexible to bear beating better. Meanwhile, a uniquely beautiful pattern was created during the clay tempered process, which is what we call Hamon today.
